Criminal Appeals and Post-Conviction Relief

At The Law Office of Katherine Godin, Inc., we are prepared to handle all stages of criminal proceedings, from arraignment to post-conviction relief.  Once you have reached the appellate and/or post-conviction stages, it is crucial that you have an attorney who understands the legal procedure and applicable law, so that you are in the best position to request  that the Court overturn your conviction.  Unfortunately, you do not have a lot of time to begin the appellate process (the Rhode Island Supreme Court requires that you file a notice of appeal within 20 days of the judgment being entered in your case).  That is why you should contact a dedicated, proficient appellate attorney who is knowledgable in criminal law and will take the time to present the best possible appeal in your case.

Kate Godin has had extensive experience in appellate procedure, starting at her internship with the United States Attorney's Office for the District of Rhode Island during law school, at which time she drafted several appellate briefs submitted to the Second Circuit Federal Court of Appeals on behalf of the U.S. Attorney's Office.  Kate was also a two-year Executive Board Member of the Roger Williams University School of Law Moot Court Board.  Over the last four years, Kate has participated in appeals to the Rhode Island Supreme Court, the First and Second Circuit Federal Courts of Appeals, and has aided in the submission of amicus curiae briefs to the Rhode Island Supreme Court (in the Lead Hazard Mitigation Act case of Mackie v. State, 936 A.2d 588 (R.I. 2007), which was successfully appealed) and the United States Supreme Court (in the Exxon Valdez oil spill case of Exxon v. Baker , 128 S.Ct. 2605 (2008)).  Kate's greatest accomplishment to date in appellate practice was helping R.I. Lawyers Weekly's 2008 Lawyer of the Year George J. West successfully appeal a murder conviction.  Attorney Godin's trial skills and experience also make her better prepared to identify appealable issues in the case.

Kate has also been added to the Massachusetts Committee for Public Counsel Services (CPCS) Post-Conviction Panel, which provides appellate representation to indigent criminal defendants.
